The Best Sunscreens for Oily Skin, According to Dermatologists

Oily skin can make finding the right sunscreen challenging. A suitable sunscreen for oily skin should protect from UV rays without clogging pores or contributing to excess shine. Dermatologists recommend sunscreens that are labeled ‘non-comedogenic,’ meaning they won’t block pores, and ‘oil-free’ to prevent adding extra oil to the skin.

For those with oily skin, gel-based sunscreens can be a blessing. They provide a matte finish and typically contain ingredients like silica or isododecane which help to absorb excess oil and control shine. A great choice is La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60 which is known for its light-weight, dry-touch formula.

Mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are another excellent option. They sit on top of the skin, physically blocking UV rays. A dermatologist favorite is EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. It’s specifically formulated for individuals with oily and acne-prone skin as it’s non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and contains niacinamide to soothe redness.

An additional benefit comes from sunscreens that incorporate antioxidants like vitamins C and E which can protect against free radical damage and enhance SPF protection. Some dermatologists suggest the Cetaphil Pro Oil Absorbing Moisturizer with SPF 30, not only because it has a matte finish useful for managing oily skin but also due to the presence of these beneficial antioxidants.

For those who wear makeup daily, a tinted sunscreen can double as a foundation while providing sun protection. Dermatologists often point to products like SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 that uses universal tint technology to enhance the natural tone of the skin while offering sheer coverage.

Lastly, Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 45 PA+++ receives high praise from skincare professionals. Its formula controls oil for up to 10 hours while ensuring broad-spectrum protection, making it ideal for long days spent outdoors.

No matter which product you choose, regular application is key. Dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen generously 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours or after swimming/sweating for maximum protection on oily skin.
