The Best Lights to Help You Survive a Power Outage

Power outages can happen at any time and are usually unpredictable. When the lights go out, it is essential to have a reliable light source to navigate through the dark. Here are some of the best lights that should be part of your emergency preparedness kit to help you survive a power outage.

1. LED Flashlights – LED flashlights are durable, energy-efficient, and provide bright illumination. They often have adjustable beams and can run for hours or even days on a single set of batteries. Many modern LED flashlights also feature different modes, such as low, medium, high, and strobe.

2. Solar-Powered Lanterns – Solar-powered lanterns are ideal for power outages because they can be charged during the day using sunlight and then used at night for ample lighting. They don’t require batteries and often come with additional features such as USB ports for charging other devices.

3. Crank-Powered Lights – Hand crank lights offer unlimited light as long as you are willing to put in the manual effort. They are an excellent option for emergency situations because they do not depend on batteries or electricity.

4. Candle Lanterns – Candle lanterns provide a softer light compared to LED lanterns but can be useful for creating ambient lighting in a room. They require candles but can last quite long depending on the candle size and can also add warmth in cold weather.

5. Battery-Powered Headlamps – Headlamps free up your hands while providing directed light right where you need it. They’re perfect when you need to perform tasks in the dark without holding a flashlight, such as cooking or setting up other lighting options.

6. Glow Sticks – Though not the brightest option, glow sticks can be an excellent choice for marking locations and providing soft, ambient light without any risk of fire. They’re also very lightweight and portable, making them easy to distribute among family members during an outage.

Regardless of which lighting options you choose for your home, it is vital to test them regularly and keep them accessible so you aren’t left scrambling in the dark during an unexpected power outage. A combination of these lighting solutions will ensure that you’re well-prepared for when the power goes out.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
