The French film industry is known for its rich history and contributions to cinema, from pioneering the art of filmmaking to producing critically acclaimed movies that resonate with international audiences. With the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and others, the best of French cinema is now readily accessible to viewers around the world. Here are some of the best French movies available for streaming:

1. “Blue Is the Warmest Colour” (Netflix) — This intimate romantic drama, directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, won the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It follows the life-altering romance between teenagers Adèle and Emma.

2. “Amélie” (HBO Max) — Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s whimsical and visually stunning film tells the story of Amélie Poulain, a young woman who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while grappling with her own isolation.

3. “La Haine” (Max) — Mathieu Kassovitz’s gritty black-and-white portrayal of a day in the lives of three young men from diverse backgrounds in the aftermath of a riot represents a milestone in contemporary French cinema.

4. “The Intouchables” (Netflix) — This feel-good movie by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano is based on a true story. It explores the unlikely friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic and his ex-con caretaker.

5. “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (Hulu) — Céline Sciamma’s breathtaking period piece centers on the forbidden love affair between an aristocratic woman and a female artist commissioned to paint her portrait.

6. “My Life as a Zucchini” (Netflix) — Claude Barras directed this touching stop-motion animated film about an orphan who learns about trust and love after being sent to a foster home.

7. “Raw” (Netflix) — For horror enthusiasts, Julia Ducournau’s ‘Raw’ is a visceral exploration of carnal desires and identity that centers on a young vegetarian who develops an unsettling craving for flesh after a hazing ritual.

8. “Caché” (Amazon Prime Video) — Director Michael Haneke delivers this intense psychological thriller about a family receiving mysterious videotapes that suggest they are under surveillance.

9. “Paris, Texas” (The Criterion Channel) — Although directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, this poignant drama featuring stunning landscapes has dialogue mostly in French and delves deep into themes of love and loss through its Parisian protagonist’s journey.

10. “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” (Hulu) — Robin Campillo’s powerful depiction of AIDS activism in early 90s Paris captures the urgency and humanity at  the heart of the ACT UP movement.

This selection represents just a tip of the iceberg when it comes to French cinema’s offerings on streaming services, covering a variety of genres that showcase France’s cinematic flair and storytelling prowess. Whether you’re looking for romance, drama, or even animated films for all ages—streaming platforms have become treasure troves for French film aficionados everywhere.
