Living in an area with limited space doesn’t mean you have to give up on the dream of having a beautiful tree-filled yard. There are many small trees that are perfect for compact areas, offering shade, color, and even fruit without overwhelming the space. Here are seven of the best small trees for a compact yard.

1. Crabapple (Malus spp.): These trees not only provide gorgeous spring blossoms but also produce fruit that can attract wildlife. Dwarf varieties like the ‘Sargent’ crabapple grow only 6-10 feet tall.

2. Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum): With hundreds of cultivars to choose from, there’s a Japanese maple to suit any small yard. Many grow slowly and can be kept under 15 feet with pruning.

3. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis): This North American native has heart-shaped leaves and is renowned for its stunning pink flowers in early spring. It typically grows 20-30 feet tall but can be pruned to keep it smaller.

4. Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.): Also known as Juneberry, this tree provides year-round interest with white spring flowers, summer berries, brilliant fall foliage, and smooth gray bark in winter. Some species stay as short as 15 feet.

5. Dogwood (Cornus spp.): Dogwoods are beloved for their beautiful spring blooms and come in both pink and white varieties. They usually remain under 25 feet in height.

6. Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia spp.): These trees are attractive throughout the year with their showy summer blossoms, mottled bark, and autumn colors. Dwarf varieties remain around 10 feet tall.

7. Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’): A compact version of the Southern magnolia, this tree grows to about 20 feet tall and boasts large, fragrant white flowers.

These trees prove that even the smallest yards can host a variety of arboreal beauty without taking over the space or creating too much shade. With appropriate choices and some strategic pruning, your compact yard can thrive with these stunning small trees.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
