As autumn arrives, the landscape transforms into a stunning palette of warm hues. The fleeting beauty of fall color is a cherished spectacle, and selecting the right trees can turn your yard into an autumnal paradise. Here are six trees that landscapers recommend for creating a beautiful fall display in your yard.

1. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)

The sugar maple boasts a brilliant display of fiery red, orange, and yellow leaves in the fall. This tree is not only known for its sweet sap, which is used to make maple syrup but also for its vibrant fall color that can make any yard stand out.

2. Red Maple (Acer rubrum)

Red maple is another favorite for its dependable fall color. As one of the first trees to change color, it offers stunning shades of bright red and burgundy leaves that can truly make a statement in any landscape.

3. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)

Ginkgo trees are unique with their fan-shaped leaves that turn a luminous yellow in autumn. This ancient tree species is not only attractive but also resilient, making it an excellent choice for urban yards.

4. Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica)

Also known as black gum or sour gum, the black tupelo is renowned for its stunning shades of orange, red, and purple in the fall. It has a picturesque growth habit with glossy summer foliage that makes it attractive even outside the fall season.

5. Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua)

Sweetgum trees radiate with star-shaped leaves that present a kaleidoscope of fall colors from gold to deep burgundy. This tree can add both texture and a burst of color to any yard.

6. Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum)

Japanese maples are the epitome of elegance with their delicate leaves and diverse range of shapes and sizes. The array of colors these trees offer in autumn—ranging from bright crimson to soft yellows—can create an enchanting atmosphere in small gardens or as focal points in larger landscapes.

Planting any of these beauties will add dramatic flair to your autumn landscape year after year. So consider their growth requirements and match them to your yard’s conditions for a spectacular fall show that will be the envy of your neighborhood.
