Tekken 3, released in 1997 for arcades and later ported to the PlayStation in 1998, represents the pinnacle of 3D fighting games in the 1990s. Developed by Namco, this title refined the 3D fighting mechanics introduced in its predecessors and set a new standard for the genre.

What sets Tekken 3 apart is its fluid, realistic movement system. The game introduced sidestep mechanics, allowing players to move in and out of the background and foreground. This added a new dimension to fights, literally and figuratively, enabling more complex strategies and evasion techniques.

The game boasts an impressive roster of characters, each with distinct fighting styles based on real martial arts. From the capoeira of Eddy Gordo to the boxing prowess of Steve Fox, Tekken 3 offers a diverse range of gameplay options. The addition of new, younger characters like Jin Kazama and Ling Xiaoyu injected fresh energy into the series’ storyline.

Tekken 3 also excelled in its game modes. Beyond the standard arcade and versus modes, it introduced unique mini-games like Tekken Force and Tekken Ball. These additions provided players with more varied content and helped to flesh out the Tekken universe.

The game’s graphics were groundbreaking for its time, with smooth animations and detailed character models that pushed the PlayStation hardware to its limits. The atmospheric stages and energetic soundtrack further enhanced the immersive fighting experience.

Tekken 3’s impact on the fighting game community was significant and long-lasting. It popularized 3D fighters and influenced the development of future titles in the genre. Its balanced gameplay and depth continue to make it a favorite among competitive players, even decades after its release.
