Introduction

The highly anticipated Brooks Hyperion Elite 5, released in January 2025, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of marathon racing shoes. Building on the success of its predecessors, this latest iteration promises to deliver unparalleled performance for elite runners and ambitious amateurs alike. With the competitive landscape of carbon-plated racing shoes becoming increasingly crowded, let’s examine how the Hyperion Elite 5 stands out and whether it lives up to the hype.

The Review

The first thing you notice about the Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 is its striking appearance. Brooks has gone for a bold, futuristic design that screams speed. The translucent upper showcases the internal structure of the shoe, including glimpses of the carbon fiber plate, creating a visually stunning effect that’s sure to turn heads at the starting line.

Slipping into the Hyperion Elite 5, you’re immediately struck by how light it feels. Weighing in at a mere 7.4 oz for men’s size 9 and 6.8 oz for women’s size 8, it’s one of the lightest marathon racers on the market. Despite its featherweight construction, the shoe feels surprisingly stable, thanks to Brooks’ innovative approach to the midsole geometry.

The upper is a marvel of minimalist design. Brooks has used a new type of engineered mesh that’s incredibly thin yet surprisingly supportive. The material is so breathable that you can almost see through it, which should prove invaluable in hot race conditions. The fit is snug but not constrictive, with a secure heel lock and a slightly wider toe box that allows for natural toe splay.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the midsole. Brooks has introduced their latest DNA FLASH v2 foam, which offers an incredible balance of cushioning and energy return. The foam feels softer than in previous versions, providing more comfort over long distances without sacrificing responsiveness. Embedded within the midsole is a redesigned carbon fiber plate that Brooks claims offers 10% more propulsion than the previous model.

One of the most notable improvements in the Hyperion Elite 5 is the stability. Previous versions were sometimes criticized for feeling a bit wobbly, especially for heavier runners or during the later stages of a marathon. Brooks has addressed this by widening the base slightly and incorporating what they call “GuideRails” technology. These subtle supportive elements kick in when your form starts to falter, helping to keep your feet aligned and reducing the risk of late-race fatigue-induced injuries.

The outsole features a new rubber compound that offers exceptional grip, even in wet conditions. The traction pattern has been optimized based on wear patterns observed in elite marathoners, providing grip where it’s needed most while keeping weight to a minimum. Early reports suggest that durability has been improved, though as with most super shoes, the Hyperion Elite 5 is still primarily designed for race day rather than high-mileage training.

The ride of the Hyperion Elite 5 is where this shoe truly shines. The combination of the responsive DNA FLASH v2 foam and the tuned carbon plate creates a sensation of effortless propulsion. The rocker geometry is more pronounced than in previous versions, creating a smooth heel-to-toe transition that feels almost automatic. At marathon pace, the shoe seems to disappear, leaving you feeling like you’re flying just above the ground.

Energy return is exceptional, with many testers reporting that their legs felt fresher in the later stages of long runs compared to other racing shoes. The cushioning strikes an excellent balance, soft enough to protect your legs over 26.2 miles but firm enough to maintain a feeling of ground connection and responsiveness.

One potential drawback for some runners might be the relatively high price point. However, given the cutting-edge technology and performance benefits, many will find it a worthwhile investment for their most important races.

Conclusion

The Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 represents a significant leap forward in marathon racing shoe technology. It successfully addresses the minor weaknesses of its predecessors while building on their strengths to create a shoe that’s not just fast, but also comfortable and stable enough for the grueling demands.
