Introduction

Sony has once again raised the bar in console gaming with the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro in November 2024. This mid-generation upgrade to the already impressive PS5 promises enhanced performance, improved graphics, and a suite of new features. In this review, we’ll explore how the PS5 Pro builds upon its predecessor and whether it’s worth the upgrade for existing PS5 owners or newcomers to the PlayStation ecosystem.

Design and Build

At first glance, the PS5 Pro maintains the futuristic aesthetic of the original PS5, but with a sleeker, slightly more compact design. The two-tone color scheme remains, but with a darker, more premium finish. Sony has addressed some of the criticisms of the original design by making the console more living room-friendly and easier to position both vertically and horizontally.

Performance Upgrades

The heart of the PS5 Pro is its significantly upgraded hardware. With a more powerful custom AMD RDNA 3 GPU and increased clock speeds, the Pro offers substantial improvements in both resolution and framerates. Many games now run at native 4K resolution at 60 fps, with some titles even pushing 120 fps at 4K. The inclusion of advanced upscaling technology allows for 8K output on compatible displays, though native 8K gaming remains limited.

Ray Tracing and Visual Enhancements

One of the most touted features of the PS5 Pro is its enhanced ray tracing capabilities. Games like “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” and “Horizon Forbidden West” showcase incredibly realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows, bringing a new level of immersion to already stunning worlds. The improved hardware also allows for more detailed textures and increased draw distances in open-world games.

Loading Times and Storage

Building on the already impressive SSD of the original PS5, the Pro version includes a faster, larger capacity SSD. Load times, which were already quick, are now virtually instantaneous in most games. The increased storage capacity (1TB as standard) is a welcome addition, allowing players to keep more games installed without constant management.

DualSense Pro Controller

Alongside the console, Sony introduced the DualSense Pro controller. This enhanced version of the original DualSense features adjustable trigger resistance, additional back buttons, and improved haptic feedback. The controller’s battery life has also been extended, addressing one of the few criticisms of the original DualSense.

Backwards Compatibility and Game Library

The PS5 Pro is fully backwards compatible with all PS5 and PS4 games, with many receiving automatic enhancements when played on the Pro. Sony has also introduced a “Pro Enhanced” label for games specifically optimized for the new hardware, ensuring players can easily identify titles that take full advantage of the system’s capabilities.

PSVR2 Integration

For virtual reality enthusiasts, the PS5 Pro offers enhanced performance for PSVR2 titles. The increased processing power allows for higher resolution, improved frame rates, and more complex VR worlds, further cementing PlayStation’s position in the console VR space.

Price and Value Proposition

Priced at $599, the PS5 Pro represents a significant investment. For new buyers, it offers the most advanced console gaming experience available. For existing PS5 owners, the decision to upgrade will depend on how much they value the enhanced performance and visual upgrades.

Conclusion

The PlayStation 5 Pro is an impressive piece of hardware that pushes console gaming to new heights. Its enhanced performance, improved ray tracing, and ability to deliver consistent 4K60 gameplay make it a tempting proposition for those seeking the best possible console gaming experience. While the improvements may not be revolutionary for all users, particularly those satisfied with the base PS5, the Pro model solidifies Sony’s position at the forefront of console technology. For enthusiasts and those with 4K or 8K displays, the PS5 Pro offers a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade that will likely set the standard for console gaming in the coming years.
