New England has two of the best crowd-free fall foliage destinations

As autumn paints the New England landscape with a palette of crimson, gold, and orange, leaf peepers flock to this picturesque region to witness nature’s annual spectacle. While popular spots like the White Mountains in New Hampshire and Vermont’s Green Mountains often see a high volume of visitors, those seeking a more serene leaf-viewing experience will be delighted to know that New England also offers hidden gems where one can enjoy fall foliage without the crowds.

The first of these tranquil locales is the enchanting Groton State Forest in Vermont. Unlike its more frequented counterparts, Groton State Forest offers a peaceful retreat amongst its dense forestland and reflective waters. With over 26,000 acres containing a variety of trees such as sugar maples, aspens, and beeches, visitors can bask in the vibrant fall colors during a quiet hike or canoe ride. The forest includes several state parks, but Owl’s Head Mountain is particularly notable for a panoramic view of the kaleidoscope of foliage.

The second destination is the picturesque Connecticut River Valley which cuts through both Vermont and New Hampshire. This lush region provides an off-the-beaten-path foliage tour with historical towns and farmland lining its banks. Enjoy a scenic drive along the river where various lookouts offer stunning views without any sign of large tourist groups clamoring for photos. You can also take to the water on a calm river cruise or indulge in some apple picking at one of the many orchards. In addition to fall colors, you’ll find an array of harvest festivals that celebrate local heritage and craft.

Both destinations exemplify New England’s understated beauty during fall foliage season and are perfect for those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle. So when planning your autumn adventure, consider these quieter spots for an equally gorgeous but much more relaxed foliage experience.
