Matt Damon Picks the Best Line From ‘Good Will Hunting’

Matt Damon, one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, has a career punctuated with many memorable roles and lines. Among these, one line from the classic film ‘Good Will Hunting’ stands out as his personal favorite. The 1997 drama, which he co-wrote with longtime friend Ben Affleck, tells the story of Will Hunting, a troubled yet brilliant young man from South Boston.

During a pivotal moment in the movie, Robin Williams’ character, Sean Maguire, confronts Will about his defense mechanisms and his fear of taking chances on life’s opportunities. It is here that Sean delivers the line that resonates deeply with Damon: “It’s not your fault.” This moment is a breakthrough for Will, as he grapples with his past and the emotional walls he’s built around himself.

The simplicity and compassion encapsulated in this phrase embody a turning point not only for the character but also for anyone watching who has ever felt trapped by their own circumstances. Matt Damon has spoken about how this particular line perfectly captures the essence of the movie’s message — that understanding and acceptance can be powerful catalysts for change. Damon emphasizes that it’s a consistent reminder of the film’s enduring legacy and its impact on audiences.

‘Good Will Hunting’ went on to become a critical and commercial success, earning Damon an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay alongside Affleck. But beyond awards and accolades, it is moments like these — where a single line can touch so many — that define Damon’s career and illustrate his ability to pick scripts that resonate on a deeper level.
