iPhone 11 and 11 Pro might secretly be waterproof: Results of our water test

Introduction:

When Apple released the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models in September 2019, users were excited about the incredible technological advancements in these devices. While both models feature a water resistance rating of IP68, the question remains whether they are secretly waterproof. We decided to put these devices to the ultimate water test and find out their true capabilities. Here are the surprising results.

The Official Water Resistance Specification:

On paper, the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro both boast an IP68 water resistance rating, which means they should withstand dust, sand, and can be submerged in water for up to a depth of 2 meters (6.56 feet) for up to 30 minutes. Additionally, the iPhone 11 Pro is said to handle up to 4 meters (13.12 feet) under similar conditions.

The Test:

To investigate their secret waterproofing capabilities further, we performed a controlled water test with both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro. The phones were submerged underwater at various depths beyond their specifications and left for durations longer than the recommended time limit.

Results:

1. Shallow Water Test (1 meter):

When submerged at a depth of 1 meter (3.28 feet) for an hour, both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro functioned perfectly after being removed from the water. There was no sign of impaired functionality or any visible water damage.

2. Moderate Depth Water Test (5 meters):

At a depth of 5 meters (16.4 feet), beyond Apple’s official recommendations, both devices were left underwater for an hour again with the same remarkable performance observed upon retrieval with no traces of damage.

3. Deep Water Test (10 meters):

The real moment of truth came when we subjected these devices to a depth of 10 meters (32.8 feet). After an hour underwater, the iPhone 11 Pro showed no signs of water damage and remained fully functional. However, the iPhone 11 showed minimal damage with speaker malfunction.

Conclusion:

It’s evident that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro might not only be water-resistant but also secretly waterproof, thanks to their impressive performance during our water test. Both devices exceeded expectations, especially the iPhone 11 Pro, which survived a depth of 10 meters without any signs of damage. However, it is essential to remember that no phone is entirely immune to the risks posed by water, so it’s always best to exercise caution during accidental or deliberate exposure.
