I’m a Trainer, and I Discovered the Best Way to Go Running on Vacation

Running on vacation can seem like a daunting task, but as a seasoned trainer, I’ve discovered the best approach to maintaining your routine while savoring your time away from the daily grind. The key is preparation and adaptation—blending your workout with the spirit of adventure that comes with exploring new places.

Firstly, research your destination beforehand. Look for local parks, running trails, or community tracks. Many resort towns and cities have well-maintained paths specifically designed for runners. Nowadays, various apps provide detailed maps and routes uploaded by other runners, which can help you plot your course before you even pack your bags.

Equipment is crucial; make sure you pack accordingly. The right shoes are a no-brainer, but also consider moisture-wicking apparel to stay comfortable in different climates. Be mindful not to overpack—versatile gear that can be used for multiple runs or cross-training activities is ideal.

Adaptability is your greatest asset when running on vacation. You may be used to a strict routine at home, but vacation is an opportunity to switch things up. This could mean running at different times of the day or trying new types of running—like beach running or trail running—that align with your holiday environment.

Turn your runs into exploratory missions. Instead of sticking headphones in and tuning out the world, let the sights and sounds of a new place energize you. After all, one of the joys of vacation is experiencing something different from your usual scenery.

Safety should always be paramount. Run during daylight hours and inform someone—like the hotel staff—about your route and expected return time. If possible, find a running group or community that welcomes visitors; it’s an excellent way to stay safe and might also lead to new friendships.

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a run or shorten your mileage. Vacation is about relaxation and enjoyment first and foremost. Value this time as an active rest period that allows both your body and mind to recover.

Incorporate these tips into your next vacation plan, and you’ll discover just how rewarding and rejuvenating running whilst away from home can be. You’ll return not just with souvenirs and memories but potentially with an even stronger commitment to the sport you love.
