The Best Fish and Chips in London

Fish and chips is an iconic British dish, beloved by locals and tourists alike. In London, the quest for the best fish and chips can seem like a monumental task, given the sheer number of eateries offering this classic comfort food. However, some establishments stand out for their superbly crispy batter, flaky fish, and perfectly golden chips.

At the top of the list is ‘The Golden Chippy’ in Greenwich. This family-run chippy has garnered a loyal following because of its consistently excellent food and warm service. The fish here is always fresh, often sourced straight from Billingsgate Market, and the batter is crispy yet light, creating the perfect coating without being greasy.

Another must-visit spot is ‘Kerbisher & Malt’, which has multiple locations across London. It brings a modern twist to traditional fish and chips, offering sustainably sourced fish and hand-cut chips along with homemade tartar sauce. They take pride in their lighter batter and clean cooking practices that leave customers satisfied but not overly full.

‘Poppies Fish & Chips’, with several outlets including in Spitalfields and Soho, transports you back in time with its retro 1950s-style décor. Poppies are famous for their large portions of haddock or cod, fresh from the sea each morning. Their secret batter recipe has been passed down through generations and keeps guests coming back for more.

For those looking for something a bit different, ‘Toff’s’ of Muswell Hill offers premium options such as halibut or skate cooked to perfection. Toff’s has been in operation since 1968 and prides itself on serving high-quality fare with great attention to detail—from the careful selection of potatoes to the cooking method that ensures crispy chips with fluffy insides.

Lastly, ‘The Fish House of Notting Hill’ provides a delightful experience for those after gorgeously golden fish and chunky chips enjoyed in a cozy boutique setting. With fresher-than-fresh fish delicately seasoned before taking a dip in the fryer, they’ve honed their dishes to offer some of the best fish and chips London has to offer.

Each establishment offers its unique charm and approach to this quintessentially British dish. While opinions will always differ on where to find the absolute best fish and chips in London, these eateries are certainly contenders that should be on every connoisseur’s list. Whether it’s the friendly neighborhood charm of The Golden Chippy or the contemporary flair of Kerbisher & Malt, these locales prove that when it comes to deliciously satisfying British cuisine, fish and chips reign supreme.
