How water-resistant is the iPhone 7?

Introduction

The iPhone 7, released in September 2016, brought a significant change in its design by introducing water resistance for the first time in Apple’s iPhone series. In this article, we will discuss how water-resistant the iPhone 7 truly is and what precautions buyers and users should take when using their devices around water.

IP67 Rating Explained

The iPhone 7 holds an IP67 rating, providing it with a certain degree of protection against water and dust intrusion. An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is composed of two digits that determine the device’s resistance to solid particles (such as dust) and liquid ingress.

The first digit (6) corresponds to dust protection, offering complete protection from dust accumulation inside the device. The second digit (7) signifies water resistance under specific conditions. With an IP67 rating, the iPhone 7 is said to be resistant to immersion in up to one meter (3.3 feet) of freshwater for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Precautions and Limitations

Although the iPhone 7 offers some level of water resistance, it is important to note that it is not completely waterproof. Here are some precautions and limitations users need to be aware of:

1. Water-resistant vs. waterproof: The iPhone 7’s IP67 rating means it is capable of surviving accidental spills or brief immersion in freshwater but must not be submerged intentionally for extended periods or taken into deep waters.

2. Time limitation: The device must not be submerged longer than 30 minutes, as prolonged exposure might lead to water seeping into the device.

3. Depth limitation: It can only withstand immersion up to one meter deep; deeper depths might compromise the device’s integrity due to high pressure.

4. Freshwater only: The IP67 rating applies only to freshwater; exposure to saltwater, pool chlorine, steam, or other liquids increases the risk of damaging your iPhone 7.

5. Wear and tear: Over time, the iPhone 7’s water resistance could degrade due to general use, dropping, or repairs made outside Apple’s authorized service centers.

6. No guarantee for water damage: Apple’s warranty does not cover any water damage to the device, even though it holds an IP67 rating. Therefore, users must exercise caution when using their devices around water.

Conclusion

The iPhone 7 provides a certain level of water resistance with its IP67 rating, making it capable of handling accidental spills and brief immersions in freshwater. Users must understand the limitations of this feature and take proper precautions when using their devices near or around water activities. It is essential to remember that despite having a water-resistant feature, the iPhone 7 is not entirely waterproof and is susceptible to damage if not handled appropriately.
