How to Use an NTFS Drive on Mac: 4 Methods

Mac users often face a challenge when it comes to accessing NTFS drives. The Native File System (NTFS) is widely used in Windows operating systems, making it challenging to read and write files using Mac. However, there are ways around this problem. This article will explore four methods in which Mac users can use an NTFS drive.

Method 1: Use Third-Party Software

One way to use an NTFS drive on a Mac is by using third-party software. There are several options available, but some popular ones are Tuxera NTFS, iBoysoft NTFS for Mac, Paragon NTFS for Mac, and NTFS-3G. These software programs will allow you to read and write files to the NTFS drive.

To use this method, first, select a third-party software of your choice and download it. After downloading the software, install it on your Mac computer. Once installed, connect the NTFS drive to your Mac. The software program will recognize the drive, and you can begin to read and write files on the drive.

Method 2: Use macOS’s Built-in NTFS Write Option

The latest versions of macOS, including macOS Catalina and Big Sur, have an in-built NTFS write option. This method allows Mac users to write to NTFS drives without using any third-party software. However, it’s crucial to note that this option is not fully supported by Apple.

To use this method, open Disk Utility on your Mac. Locate the NTFS drive and select it. Click on the “Erase” button and select the “ExFAT” format option. This format allows you to read and write files on both Mac and Windows.

Method 3: Use Cloud Storage Services

A third way to use an NTFS drive on a Mac is by using cloud storage services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud. These services allow you to upload and access your files from anywhere, including on both Mac and Windows.

To use this method, sign up for a cloud storage account on any of the services of your choice. Next, upload your files to the cloud storage service and access them from your Mac.

Method 4: Use a File Transfer System

Finally, another way to use an NTFS drive on a Mac is to use a file transfer system. The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and the Network File System (NFS) allow you to transfer files between Mac and Windows operating systems. This method, however, requires some technical expertise.

To use this method, set up a FTP or NFS on your Mac. Then, connect to the NTFS drive from your Mac using the file transfer protocol or network file system.
