In today’s rapidly advancing digital era, we’re constantly connected to our devices, making it increasingly necessary to find ways to unplug and focus on mental health. Google understands this need and has introduced Digital Wellbeing for Android to help users maintain a healthy balance between their online and offline lives. Here’s a guide on how to use Google’s Digital Wellbeing features effectively.

1. Enabling Digital Wellbeing:

To enable the Digital Wellbeing app on your Android device, go to ‘Settings’, then scroll down and select ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’. If it’s not pre-installed on your phone, you can download the app from the Google Play Store.

2. Dashboard overview:

Once you’ve enabled Digital Wellbeing, you can view your dashboard that provides an overview of your daily digital activity. This includes app usage time, number of unlocks, and notification counts. You can customize the data shown on the dashboard by changing the date range and app categories as per your requirement.

3. App timers:

Setting app timers is helpful if you want to limit your usage of specific apps. To set a timer, open the Digital Wellbeing dashboard, scroll down to the list of apps, and tap an app you’d like to set a timer for. Select how long you’d like to use that specific app each day. Once that time has been reached, you’ll be locked out of the app for the remainder of the day.

4. Wind Down Mode:

Wind Down mode helps reduce eye strain and transition into sleep at night by gradually turning your device screen greyscale and enabling Do Not Disturb mode. To enable Wind Down mode, navigate to ‘Settings’, select ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’, then choose ‘Wind Down’ or ‘Bedtime Mode’. Customize the schedule as per your preference and choose which features you’d like to enable during Wind Down.

5. Focus Mode:

When it’s time to focus, and you don’t want any notifications or distractions, turn on ‘Focus Mode.’ You can select specific apps to pause temporarily so that you can concentrate on your tasks without interruptions. Go to ‘Settings’, choose ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’, and select ‘Focus Mode’. Pick the apps you’d like to pause, toggle the switch to turn on Focus Mode, and enjoy a distraction-free environment.

6. Managing notifications:

To prevent constant distractions from various app notifications, use Digital Wellbeing’s notification customization options. You can turn off specific types of notifications or schedule custom notification periods. Go to ‘Settings’, choose ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’, and navigate to the ‘Manage Notifications’ section. Here you can disable or enable notifications for individual apps as well as set notification schedules.

Conclusion:

Google’s Digital Wellbeing features provide practical ways for Android users to unplug and maintain a healthy balance between their digital and real life experiences. By implementing these simple practices, you can reduce device dependency while enhancing your focus on what truly matters. Give it a try and see how it benefits your overall wellbeing.
