As a video platform, YouTube has revolutionized the way we consume information and entertainment online. With millions of videos available, it’s easy to find content that captures our attention and keeps us engaged for hours. However, for those who have hearing difficulties, understanding video content may be a problem. Fortunately, YouTube offers closed captions to provide a better viewing experience for those who need it. Here’s how to turn them on or off.

Step 1: Visit the Video Player

To turn on closed captions on YouTube, you need to visit the video player. Once you have decided on the video you want to watch, click on the play button to start the video.

Step 2: Find the “CC” Button

At the bottom of the playback screen, you’ll see several tools, one of them being the “CC” button. For some videos, the CC symbol may not appear, which means that there aren’t any closed captions available for that video.

Step 3: Click the “CC” Button

Once you’ve located the “CC” button, click on it to enable closed captions. To disable captions, click on the button again, and the captions will disappear.

Step 4: Choose Your Language if Necessary

If the video provides multiple language options, you can choose which language caption to enable. Clicking the gear icon beside the “CC” button allows you to select an auto-translate option, meaning that the captions automatically translate to your preferred language. However, this may not be very accurate, so it’s always better to select the language yourself.

Step 5: Customize the Caption Appearance

YouTube provides custom features that let you change the look and feel of closed captions. To do this, click on the gear icon beside the “CC” button and then click on “Subtitles/CC.” You can choose from various font sizes, caption colors, and background colors based on your preference. You can also enable the text edge style, background opaqueness, and custom fonts.

Step 6: Understand the Difference Between Closed Captions and Open Captions

Closed captions are those that can be turned on or off by the viewer. On the other hand, open captions are those that are built into the video file and cannot be turned off. Therefore, if you notice that the captions are always on even when the “CC” button is off, you’re watching a video with open captions.

In conclusion, YouTube’s closed captions provide an excellent opportunity to enhance the viewing experience for people with hearing difficulties. These easy steps help you adjust the captions to your liking, resulting in a much more enjoyable experience.
