A screwball is a unique and tricky pitch in baseball which relies on an unorthodox grip and motion, making the ball break in the oppositsse direction of a curveball. Mastering the screwball can be challenging, but if you follow our 11-step guide, you’ll be well on your way to adding this deceptive pitch to your repertoire.

1. Warm up properly: As with any athletic activity, it’s crucial that you warm up your arm muscles before attempting to throw a screwball. Begin with some light stretching and progress to easy throws before gradually increasing intensity.

2. Choose the right grip: To throw a screwball, use a grip similar to a two-seam fastball. Gripping the ball with your middle and index fingers along the seams where they are closest together ensures optimal spin.

3. Position your thumb: Place your thumb under the baseball, near the bottom seam, for stability and control.

4. Apply pressure: When throwing the screwball, apply more pressure on the ball with your middle finger than your index finger. This added pressure will help generate the unique spin necessary for a successful screwball.

5. Maintain proper arm angle: An essential component of throwing a screwball is maintaining a low arm angle as you release the ball.

6. Begin your stride: As you bring your pitching hand back behind your body, step toward home plate with your lead leg.

7. Rotate hips and shoulders: Once you’ve completed your stride, initiate rotation by turning both hips and shoulders towards home plate simultaneously.

8. Pull down with your wrist: As you release the ball, pull down sharply with your wrist to impart spin on it. This motion is crucial for achieving that unique breaking action

9. Follow through: After releasing the ball, continue bringing your throwing arm down and across your body in a smooth arc, ensuring proper mechanics and avoiding injury.

10. Practice! Developing a reliable and effective screwball takes extensive practice. Spend time refining your grip, delivery, and release to achieve the desired motion and spin on the ball.

11. Study professional pitchers: Analyze footage of successful screwball pitchers, like Christy Mathewson or Fernando Valenzuela, to observe their mechanics and nuances in their delivery.

By following these 11 steps, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the elusive screwball pitch. Remember that practice makes perfect – so keep working on your technique until you feel comfortable throwing this deceptive pitch with consistency and accuracy.
