When interacting with someone living with schizophrenia, it is essential to be mindful of their unique needs in order to communicate effectively. Here are 12 steps that can help guide you through a productive and supportive conversation with an individual who has schizophrenia:

1.Be Patient: Schizophrenia can cause difficulty in processing information, so give the person time to understand and respond to what you are saying.

2.Use Simple Language: Communicating using straightforward, short sentences and everyday vocabulary can make it easier for the person to comprehend. Avoid using complex words, analogies or metaphors.

3.Speak Calmly: Speak in a gentle tone of voice and avoid raising your voice or speaking loudly, as it may cause agitation or discomfort.

4.Show Empathy: Demonstrate understanding and validate their feelings even if you do not necessarily agree with their perspective. Remain non-judgmental and supportive.

5.Avoid Arguing: If they express delusional or hallucinatory experiences, don’t contradict them outright; instead, gently express that you have a different point of view.

6.Focus on the Present: Center the conversation on immediate issues rather than discussing past events or incidents that may induce stress.

7.Engage in Active Listening: Be fully present, maintain eye contact, nod occasionally, and reflect back on what they are saying.

8.Emphasize Positives: Encourage them by highlighting progress, achievements, and strengths to foster hope and self-esteem.

9.Be Mindful of Personal Space: Respect physical boundaries so as not to violate their sense of safety; maintain an appropriate distance when conversing.

10.Offer Reassurance: Emphasize that support is available from friends, family members, or healthcare professionals when necessary.

11.Be Mindful of Non-Verbal Communication: Take note of facial expressions and body language to better understand their emotions and comfort levels. Adjust your body language accordingly to convey warmth, compassion, and support.

12.Encourage Collaboration: Empower them by involving them in decision-making processes, expressing that their input is valuable and respected.

By following these 12 steps, you can facilitate healthier conversations with those living with schizophrenia. Remember that patience, understanding, and empathy go a long way in fostering connection and trust.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
