Essential oils are a popular choice for those who enjoy natural remedies, alternative health practices, and aromatic products. To maintain their potency and efficacy, proper storage is crucial. Here are 12 steps you can take to store essential oils correctly.

1. Use dark-colored glass bottles: Essential oils can degrade when exposed to light, so always store them in dark-colored or amber glass bottles to protect them from UV damage.

2. Keep oils cool: High temperatures can alter an oil’s chemical compositions, so keep them in a cool location such as a cupboard or drawer away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

3. Avoid temperature fluctuations: Storing your essential oils in an area with consistent temperature is key, as constant temperature changes can also degrade the oils.

4. Store upright: Ensure essential oil bottles remain upright to prevent leakage and potential contact with the bottle’s cap, which could damage the oil’s properties.

5. Keep lids tightly closed: Prevent evaporation and contamination by always closing the lids tightly on your essential oil bottles after each use.

6. Avoid metal and plastic containers: Essential oils can react with some metals and leach chemicals from plastic containers. Therefore, use glass containers only when storing them.

7. Keep out of reach of children and pets: Due to their concentrated nature, essential oils can be harmful if ingested in large quantities or come into contact with sensitive skin areas. Store them high up or in a locked cabinet for safety.

8. Label your essential oils clearly: Properly labeling each bottle will help you stay organized and ensure you’re using the correct oil for the desired purpose.

9. Refill only with the same type of oil: Do not mix different essential oils in one bottle, as this can alter their properties and create undesired effects.

10. Check oil’s shelf life: Some essential oils have a longer shelf life than others. Periodically assess your oils and discard expired ones to maintain a safe, effective collection.

11. Keep a list of your essential oils: Maintain a list of all the oils you own, their purchase dates, and their expected shelf lives to help you identify when to replace them.

12. Educate yourself about your essential oils: Understanding the benefits, potential risks, and proper usage of each essential oil can assist you in maintaining a safe and beneficial collection.

By following these 12 steps for storing essential oils, you’ll be able to maintain the quality of your oils and enjoy their benefits for an extended period. Proper storage will help ensure you get the most out of your essential oil collection while keeping them safe for use.
