4 Ways to Clean Quarry Tiles

Introduction

Quarry tiles are popular for their durability, slip resistance, and timeless appeal, making them a perfect choice for indoor and outdoor installations. These unglazed tiles are available in various earthy colors and clay-based textures, enhancing the aesthetic value of any space. However, cleaning quarry tiles, especially after years of use or exposure to various elements, may seem challenging. In this article, we provide four effective ways to clean and maintain your quarry tiles.

1. Sweep or Vacuum Regularly

The first and simplest way to clean quarry tiles is to sweep or vacuum them regularly. This prevents the buildup of dust, dirt, and debris that can eventually become ingrained in the tile surface. Use a soft broom or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment for your routine floor cleaning. Ensure that you cover all corners and edges of the room to eliminate any hidden dirt.

2. Mop with Warm Water and Neutral Cleaner

For deeper cleaning, mop the quarry tile floor with a mixture of warm water and a neutral cleaner specifically designed for unglazed ceramic tiles. Avoid using harsh chemicals or acidic cleaners as they can damage the tile surface by etching it or causing discoloration. Mix the cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions and mop the floor with a wet mop, ensuring that you wring it out well to prevent excess water from penetrating the porous tile surface.

3. Apply Poultice for Stubborn Stains

Occasionally, you may encounter stubborn stains like oil spills or rust marks on your quarry tile floor that are resistant to regular cleaning methods. A poultice made of equal parts baking soda or white flour mixed with water can be used as an effective solution against such stains. Apply the poultice paste directly to the affected area and cover it with plastic wrap; leave it overnight to work its magic. The next day, gently remove the poultice and wash the tile surface with warm water. This method may need to be repeated for particularly stubborn stains.

4. Seal and Protect your Quarry Tiles

To maintain the pristine condition of your quarry tiles, you must seal and protect them from damage. This is especially crucial for outdoor installations exposed to weather elements or high-traffic areas. Apply a penetrating sealer that is specifically designed for unglazed ceramic tiles, following the manufacturer’s instructions. The sealer will protect the tiles from staining and make them easier to clean in the future.

Conclusion

Keeping your quarry tile floors clean not only enhances their appearance but also prolongs their life. By following these four effective ways to clean quarry tiles, you can ensure their durability and timeless beauty for years to come. Remember always to use suitable cleaning products, avoid harsh chemicals, and protect your tiles with a high-quality sealer.
