How to Stop iMessage Photos from Saving to iPhone

If you find your iPhone’s storage quickly filling up, one culprit might be the automatic saving of photos sent and received through iMessage. By default, your iPhone saves all the media to your Photos app, which can take up precious space. Fortunately, there’s a way to stop photos from iMessages from being automatically saved. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Open the Settings App
Begin by opening the “Settings” app on your iPhone. This is typically found on your home screen and has a gear icon.
Step 2: Go to Messages Settings
Scroll down until you find the “Messages” option and tap on it. This will open the settings specific to your iMessage.
Step 3: Disable Automatic Media Saving
In the Messages settings, look for the option that pertains to media attachments. Unfortunately, as of the current iOS version, there is no toggle to stop images from automatically saving into your camera roll directly from this menu. However, you can manage storage space used by Messages.
Step 4: Manage Message Storage
Below the message history settings, tap on “Keep Messages”. Here you can opt to keep messages for a certain period (30 days, 1 year, or forever). By choosing a shorter time frame, old messages – and thus their attached photos – will be deleted automatically.
Step 5: Regularly Delete Unwanted Images Manually
Since there’s no current feature allowing you to stop saving images directly from iMessages to your iPhone, managing them manually is necessary. You can delete unwanted images by opening a message thread, tapping on the ‘i’ icon in the top right corner, selecting the images or attachments you want to delete, and then tapping on the trash icon.
Step 6: Use ‘Save Image’ Sparingly
Be mindful when receiving photos through iMessage. When you want to keep a particular photo, tap and hold on it and select “Save Image”. If it’s not something you need, just leave it within the message thread without saving it explicitly.
Remember that regular cleaning of old messages and manually managing what gets saved from iMessage is key until Apple potentially provides a direct way to prevent automatic saving of photos sent via iMessage to an iPhone’s camera roll. Keep tabs on your storage space and be selective about what deserves a spot in your device’s limited memory.
