How to Make a Full Belly Dance Skirt
Introduction:
Belly dancing is an expressive and captivating art form that requires a combination of skill, fluid movements, and fantastic costuming. A full belly dance skirt is an essential part of any belly dancer’s wardrobe, offering both elegance and freedom of movement. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your very own full belly dance skirt from scratch.
Materials You’ll Need:
– Fabric (preferably chiffon or silk) – at least 4-6 yards
– Waistband (elastic or a stiff band)
– Matching thread
– Sewing machine
– Scissors
– Pins
– Measuring tape
– Fabric marking pencil
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Fabric
The first step in making your belly dance skirt is to decide how long you want it to be and how full you want it to look. Typically, a full belly dance skirt has about 4-6 yards of fabric. Measure your waistline and multiply by 1.5 for a moderately full skirt, or by 2 for an extra full skirt (the fabric will naturally drape and pleat).
Next, fold the fabric lengthwise with the right sides facing inwards, matching the edges evenly. Mark the desired length on the folded edge and cut out the fabric more generous than marked to allow for seams.
Step 2: Sew the Skirt Panels Together
With your panels cut out, it’s time to sew them together. Pin the right sides of adjacent panels together along one long side. Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew ½-inch seam allowance down this side to connect them. Repeat this process until all panels are joined. Press these seams open or serge them if you have a serger.
Step 3: Create the Waistband
For extra comfort and a better fit, create a waistband by folding the top edge of your skirt down about 1.5 to 2 inches. Stitch along the edge, leaving a small opening for inserting the waistband elastic later.
Step 4: Inserting the Elastic
Measure your waist and cut a piece of elastic slightly smaller than your measurement (to ensure a snug fit). Using a safety pin, thread the elastic through the waistband casing you created earlier. Once threaded all the way around, sew the ends of the elastic together. Then, stitch up the small opening in the waistband casing.
Step 5: Hemming
Try on your skirt and decide where you would like it to hang—usually, it should be just above or below your ankle. Mark this on the fabric and trim any excess material, leaving enough for hemming. Fold and press the lower edge of your skirt under by about half an inch, then fold again by another half inch to encase the raw edge. Pin and sew close to this folded edge using a straight stitch.
And there you have it! A beautiful, custom-made full belly dance skirt ready to grace your next performance. Enjoy the fluidity and freedom that comes with your new creation as you mesmerize your audience with each movement.
