How to Sew European Pillowcases: 9 Steps
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
To begin making your European pillowcase, gather up the necessary materials. You’ll need:
– Fabric (preferably cotton or linen)
– Sewing machine
– Thread (matching the fabric color)
– Scissors
– Pins
– Tape measure
– Iron and ironing board
Step 2: Determine the Dimensions
European pillowcases typically measure about 26×26 inches. However, you can customize the size if needed to fit your pillows. Make sure to add an extra inch on all sides for seam allowances.
Step 3: Cut the Fabric
With your measurements in hand, cut two squares of fabric for each pillowcase. It’s best to use a rotary cutter and a cutting mat for precise cuts, but you can also use sharp scissors.
Step 4: Cut Out the Flaps
Cut out two additional pieces of fabric to create flaps on the back of each pillowcase. These flaps should be the same width as your main squares and approximately one-third of their height.
Step 5: Hem the Flaps
Fold one long edge of each flap over ½ an inch and press it with an iron. Fold it over once more to conceal any raw edges, press again, and then sew along that fold and hem with a straight stitch.
Step 6: Assemble the Pillowcase
Lay one square of fabric down, right side up. Position one hemmed flap so that its right side faces down and its hemmed edge is towards the center. Place the second hemmed flap in a similar manner above it, slightly overlapping the first flap. Lastly, place your other square of fabric on top with its right side facing down to align all edges.
Step 7: Pin and Sew
Pin together all layers of fabric at their edges. Sew around the entire perimeter using a ½ inch seam allowance. Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end of the sewing.
Step 8: Trim the Corners
Trim off excess fabric from each corner, cutting diagonally up to (but not through) your stitching. This helps reduce bulk and allows for neater, crisper corners when the pillowcase is turned right side out.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
Turn your finished European pillowcase right side out and gently push out the corners with a blunt tool, such as a pencil eraser. Iron the pillowcase to remove any wrinkles and you’re all done!
With these nine easy steps, you’ll soon have beautifully handmade European pillowcases to add style and comfort to your bedroom decor. Give these pillowcases as gifts or keep them for yourself—they’re sure to impress!
