How to Ripen Pears: 10 Steps

Pears are a delicious and nutritious snack, but it can be challenging to tell when they are just right for eating. Unlike most fruits, pears continue to ripen after being picked. If you’ve brought home some unripe pears, don’t fret! Here are ten easy steps to help you ripen your pears and enjoy them for their fullest flavor and juiciness.

1. Check the hardness: Unripe pears will feel hard when gently squeezed, while ripe pears are slightly soft to the touch.

2. Look at the color: Pears will change color slightly as they ripen. For example, green Bartlett pears become more yellow, while Anjou pears develop a deeper green hue.

3. Store them at room temperature: Place your unripe pears in a fruit basket or on your countertop away from direct sunlight. Avoid refrigerating unripe pears as cold temperatures slow down the ripening process.

4. Use a paper bag: To speed up the ripening process, place your pears in a brown paper bag and fold the top down to seal it. The bag will trap ethylene gas produced by the fruit, helping it ripen faster.

5. Add another fruit: Place an apple or banana in the paper bag with your pears. These fruits produce higher amounts of ethylene gas which will facilitate the ripening of your pears even quicker.

6. Check daily: Remember to check the ripeness of your pears each day by gently pressing near the stem end. When they soften slightly, they’re ripe and ready to eat.

7. Rotate position: Shift your pears to different positions within the bag or fruit basket daily. This will ensure even ripening.

8. Ripe vs overripe: Once they have reached optimal ripeness, consume them within a couple of days to avoid having overripe and mushy pears.

9. Refrigerate ripe pears: If you can’t eat all your pears in time, store ripe pears in the refrigerator. This will slow down the ripening process, giving you a few extra days to enjoy them.

10. Share and enjoy: Whether eaten on their own, added to salads, or served alongside a cheese platter, freshly ripened pears are a healthy and tasty treat. Share them with friends and family or savor them all by yourself.

By following these ten simple steps, you’ll have perfectly ripe and delicious pears in no time. Happy snacking!
