4 Ways to Raise Cornish Game Hens (Birds)

Introduction:

Cornish game hens, also known as Rock Cornish hens, are small birds that originated in England and are known for their tender and flavorful meat. Raising these unique birds can be a rewarding experience, whether you’re doing it for personal consumption or as a small-scale farming operation. In this article, we will examine four different ways to raise Cornish game hens successfully.

1. Proper Housing:

Providing adequate housing for your Cornish game hens is crucial for their health and development. These birds need a clean, dry, and well-ventilated environment to thrive. You can build or purchase a coop that’s large enough for them to move around comfortably, usually with at least 2-3 square feet per bird. Be sure to include roosting areas and nesting boxes for laying eggs. Additionally, secure the coop from potential predators by surrounding it with strong fencing or mesh, and regularly checking for any weak spots or openings.

2. Balanced Diet:

A well-balanced diet is essential for the growth and overall health of your Cornish game hens. These birds require high-quality poultry feed that contains all the essential nutrients they need. You can buy special game bird feed from feed stores or online retailers that provide the necessary protein levels (usually around 20-24%). Supplement their diet with fresh greens, vegetables, fruits, and grains for additional vitamins and minerals. Be sure to provide clean water daily, and monitor their food consumption to prevent overfeeding.

3. Health Management:

Regularly monitoring the health of your Cornish game hens is essential to ensure they remain disease-free and in peak condition. Perform routine check-ups to look for any signs of injury or illness. Keep an eye out for common poultry diseases like respiratory ailments, parasites (mites or lice), or digestive problems. Promptly separate sick birds from the rest of the flock to prevent the spread of illness. If necessary, consult a veterinarian or experienced poultry keeper for advice on treatment.

4. Adequate Space and Exercise:

Cornish game hens need sufficient space and stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Allow your birds room to roam outdoors during the day, giving them access to fresh air, sunlight, and exercise. Providing a spacious run or free-ranging area will enable them to forage for food, which can supplement their diet and encourage natural behaviors. Ensure they have shelter from harsh weather conditions and predators when ranging outside.

Conclusion:

Raising Cornish game hens is a rewarding experience, providing you with delicious and tender meat at the end of the process. By following these four guidelines – proper housing, a balanced diet, health management, and adequate space and exercise – you’ll be well on your way to successfully raising these unique birds. Happy farming!
