3 Ways to Zero a Rifle

Introduction:
Zeroing is the process of adjusting a rifle’s sights so that the point of aim coincides with the point of impact at a specific distance. This ensures the correct alignment between where you aim and where the bullet actually hits, making your shots more accurate and precise. In this article, we will discuss three methods of zeroing a rifle: Bore Sighting, Live Fire Exercise, and Laser Bore Sighting.
1. Bore Sighting:
Bore sighting is a method used to align the barrel of your rifle with the sights before proceeding to live-fire exercises. Here’s how you can do it:
a). First, secure your rifle in a solid rest and ensure it is unloaded.
b). Remove the bolt or look through the action if available.
c). Place a large target at around 50 or 100 yards distance.
d). Look through the barrel and adjust your rest until you see the center of the target inside your bore.
e). Adjust your scope or iron sights to have them align with the same point on the target that you see through the bore. This will get you pretty close during your first live-fire session to make further precise adjustments.
2. Live Fire Exercise:
Once you have bore sighted your rifle, move on to actual shooting for finer adjustments. Here are some steps involved in this process:
a). Set up a bullseye target at a reasonable distance (usually 50 or 100 yards).
b). Fire a three-shot group at the target, focusing on consistent shooting fundamentals each time.
c). Inspect your target after each shot group and determine which direction your shots are drifting from desired point-of-impact.
d). Make adjustments to your scope or sights based on where your shots were landing relative to the bullseye.
e). Repeat this process until your shots are consistently hitting or near about where you are aiming on the target.
3. Laser Bore Sighting:
A laser bore sighter is an electronic device that emits a laser beam to align your sights with your barrel more directly. This method is useful if a clear line-of-sight for traditional bore sighting is not available. To use laser bore sighting:
a). Install a suitable laser bore sighter into your unloaded rifle chamber or barrel end.
b). Turn on the laser, making sure it projects onto a solid surface.
c). Position your rifle on a steady rest and aim it at the target.
d). Adjust your scope or sights until they align with the projected laser dot, ensuring that both laser dot and sights are aiming at the same spot.
e). Verify zero using live-fire exercises as previously described, and make any final adjustments if necessary.
Conclusion:
Regardless of which method you choose, zeroing your rifle requires patience and precision. However, investing the time in properly zeroing your firearm will increase your confidence and accuracy on the range or in the field. Remember to always follow proper safety guidelines while handling firearms and consult an expert if you are uncertain about any aspect of zeroing or shooting.
