A toilet flange is an essential component that connects your toilet to the floor and the drainpipes. Over time, it may crack or wear out, leading to leaks and compromising the stability of the toilet. Replacing a damaged toilet flange is not as daunting as you might think, and with the right tools and some patience, you can tackle this DIY project yourself. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace a toilet flange.
Materials and Tools Needed:
– Wrench or channel lock pliers
– Screwdriver
– Putty knife or scraper
– Replacement toilet flange
– Toilet wax ring
– New mounting bolts
– Rubber gloves
– Old towels or rags
Step 1: Turn Off Water Supply and Drain the Toilet Tank
First, turn off the water supply behind the toilet by turning the shut-off valve clockwise. Then, flush the toilet several times to drain all water from the tank and bowl. Soak up any remaining water with old towels or rags.
Step 2: Disconnect Water Supply Line
Using a wrench or channel lock pliers, disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the toilet tank.
Step 3: Remove Toilet Bowl
With a screwdriver, remove the nuts and washers securing the bowl to the floor. Carefully lift the entire toilet bowl vertically off the flange, ensuring not to rock it back and forth. Place it on old towels or cardboard in a safe location.
Step 4: Clean Old Wax Ring
Wearing rubber gloves, remove any remnants of wax from both the exposed flange and bottom of the toilet bowl using a putty knife or scraper. It’s essential to clean thoroughly, as any old wax may prevent proper sealing during reinstallation.
Step 5: Remove Damaged Toilet Flange
Using a screwdriver, remove the screws holding the damaged flange to the floor. If your flange was glued to the drainpipe, it will need to be carefully cut and removed using a pipe cutter or saw.
Step 6: Install New Toilet Flange
Position the new flange over the drainpipe, making sure the holes line up with your toilet’s mounting bolts. Once in place, secure it with screws or use an appropriate adhesive for your pipe material (e.g., PVC glue for PVC piping). Ensure that the new flange is level with or slightly above the floor.
Step 7: Mounting Bolts and Wax Ring
Install new mounting bolts into the slots on either side of the flange. Place a new wax ring onto the bottom of the toilet bowl or around the flange, ensuring it is centered and well-seated.
Step 8: Reinstall Toilet Bowl
Carefully lower the toilet bowl back onto the flange, aligning mounting bolts through their respective holes. Press down firmly to compress the wax ring and create a watertight seal. Tighten washers and nuts onto mounting bolts evenly; avoid over-tightening, which could crack your toilet bowl.
Step 9: Reconnect Water Supply Line
Reattach the water supply line to the bottom of the toilet tank and tighten it securely using a wrench or channel lock pliers.
Step 10: Restore Water Supply and Test
Turn on your water supply by opening the shut-off valve counterclockwise. Let your toilet fill, then flush multiple times while inspecting for leaks around the floor base and water supply line. If no leaks are detected, congratulations – you’ve successfully replaced your toilet flange!
By following these steps, you can replace a damaged toilet flange and enjoy a leak-free, stable toilet. Regularly inspect your
