If you’ve been using your Mac for a while, you’ve likely noticed that it slows down over time. This happens for many reasons, including accumulated system junk, outdated software, and a cluttered filesystem. One way to solve this problem is by doing a clean install of the macOS. In this article, we’ll show you how to reinstall macOS for a fast and squeaky clean Mac.

Step 1: Back up your data

Before you start the process, make sure to back up your data. You can use Time Machine, which is a built-in backup tool on your Mac. This way, you can restore your files and settings when the installation is complete.

Step 2: create a bootable installer

To install a fresh macOS, you’ll need to create a bootable installer. You can use a USB drive that’s at least 16GB in size. Follow these steps to create the bootable installer:

1. Plug in the USB drive to your Mac.
2. Open the Terminal app.
3. Type this command:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/MyVolume –nointeraction
Replace ‘MyVolume’ with the name of your USB drive.
4. Wait for the process to finish.

Step 3: Erase the disk

Once you’ve created the bootable installer, restart your Mac while holding down the Option key. This will take you to the macOS Utilities screen. Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.

In Disk Utility, select your startup disk, then click Erase. Choose the format as APFS and give it a name. Click Erase. This will erase all the files on your disk, so make sure you’ve backed up everything you need.

Step 4: Install macOS

After you’ve erased the disk, exit Disk Utility and choose Install macOS from the Utilities screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to install a fresh copy of the macOS.

Step 5: Restore your data

Once the installation is complete, you can restore your data from your Time Machine backup. Connect your backup drive and follow the instructions to restore your files and settings.

Conclusion

A clean install of macOS can help speed up your Mac and get rid of any accumulated clutter and junk. By following these steps, you can reinstall macOS for a fast and squeaky clean Mac. Remember to back up your data before proceeding, and create a bootable installer to help with the installation process.
