Lemon salt is a versatile, tangy seasoning that can be used to accentuate the flavor of various dishes. Adding that wonderful taste of citrus and a touch of saltiness, this seasoning can be found in many Mediterranean-style recipes. Making your own lemon salt at home is simple and enjoyable. Just follow these nine easy steps to create a refreshing and zesty seasoning for your culinary delights.

1. Gather Your Ingredients:

To get started, you will need the following ingredients:

– 3-4 large lemons

– 1 cup coarse sea salt

2. Grate the Lemon Zest:

Wash and dry your lemons thoroughly before using a zester or fine grater to remove the zest. Be sure to only remove the yellow part of the rind, as the white pith underneath can be bitter.

3. Combine Zest and Salt:

In a mixing bowl, combine the lemon zest with one cup of coarse sea salt. Mix well so that the zest is evenly distributed throughout the salt.

4. Preheat Your Oven:

Preheat your oven to its lowest setting (usually around 200°F or 93°C). This low heat will ensure that your lemon salt dries out without burning.

5. Line a Baking Tray:

Line a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent your lemon salt from sticking as it dries out.

6. Spread Lemon Salt Mixture:

Evenly spread your lemon-salt mixture on the prepared baking tray, ensuring there are no clumps or overly thick layers.

7. Dry in the Oven:

Place your baking tray in the preheated oven, leaving it slightly ajar to allow moisture to escape. Dry your lemon salt for about two hours until it appears crisp and crumbly.

8. Cool and Grind (Optional):

Once dried, allow your lemon salt mixture to cool on the tray for approximately 20-30 minutes. If you prefer a finer consistency, use a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder to grind the cooled mixture to your desired texture.

9. Store Properly:

Transfer your homemade lemon salt to a clean, airtight container for storage. It can be stored at room temperature for several months, making it a delightful addition to your pantry.

Now that you know how to make lemon salt, you can easily incorporate this zesty seasoning into your culinary creations. Try sprinkling it over grilled vegetables, roasted chicken, or fish for an extra burst of flavor. Happy cooking!
