Kalbi, also known as Korean BBQ short ribs, is a popular dish that boasts a perfect combination of sweet and savory flavors. At the heart of this delectable dish is the kalbi marinade, which not only enhances the taste but also tenderizes the meat. In just four simple steps, you can create your own mouthwatering kalbi marinade at home.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

To make the perfect kalbi marinade, you’ll need the following ingredients:

– 1/2 cup soy sauce

– 1/4 cup sugar or honey

– 1/4 cup Asian pear, grated (can substitute with apple)

– 4 cloves garlic, minced

– 1/2 small onion, grated

– 2 tablespoons sesame oil

– 2 teaspoons rice vinegar (optional)

– 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

– 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

– Sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Step 2: Mix Your Marinade

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce, sugar or honey, grated Asian pear or apple, minced garlic, grated onion, sesame oil, rice vinegar (if using), ground black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir thoroughly until all the ingredients are well combined and the sugar has dissolved.

Step 3: Marinate Your Ribs

Place your short ribs in a large zip-top bag or airtight container. Pour the prepared kalbi marinade over them and seal the container. Ensure that all ribs are fully coated in marinade by moving them around in the bag or container. For an optimal flavor infusion, marinate the ribs for at least four hours. However, for best results, allow them to marinate overnight in your refrigerator.

Step 4: Grill, Serve, and Enjoy

When you’re ready to cook your marinated kalbi, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Remove the ribs from the marinade and allow any excess to drip off. Grill the ribs for 3-4 minutes on each side or until they have developed a nicely charred exterior and reached your desired degree of doneness. Once cooked, serve your kalbi on a plate sprinkled with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (if using) and enjoy!

In just four easy steps, you’ve created a delectable homemade kalbi marinade that’s perfect for satisfying your Korean BBQ cravings. With this flavorful marinade in your arsenal, you can impress family and friends with tender, restaurant-quality kalbi right from your own kitchen!
