Chicharrón, a deliciously crispy and flavorful snack, has its roots in Spain but has gained popularity all around the world, especially Latin America and the Philippines. Traditionally made from pork rinds or skin, chicharrón has become an indulgent treat that you can easily prepare at home. In this article, we will guide you step-by-step on how to make delectable chicharrón from scratch.

Ingredients:

– 2 pounds of pork skin or rinds (with or without a thin layer of fat)

– Kosher salt

– Vegetable oil for frying

– Lime wedges (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the pork skin: Start by cleaning the pork skin with water, removing any debris or hair. Then, pat the skin dry using paper towels.

2. Cut the skin: Use a sharp knife to trim any excess fat if desired. Then, cut the pork skin into rectangular strips or squares of approximately 2×3 inches each.

3. Boil the pork skin: Fill a large pot with enough water to completely submerge all of the pork rinds. Add a generous pinch of kosher salt and bring the water to a rolling boil. Carefully add the cut pieces of pork skin into the boiling water and simmer for about 1 hour or until they become tender yet firm.

4. Remove and dry the rinds: Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the pieces from the pot and transfer them to a cooling rack over paper towels. Allow the rinds to drain and air-dry overnight (or for at least 6 hours) until they have noticeably hardened.

5. Fry the chicharrón: In a deep frying pan or fryer, heat at least 1-inch of vegetable oil to approximately 375°F (190°C). Ensure that you have ample space to prevent overcrowding and allow the rinds to puff up properly (you may need to work in batches). Carefully lower the pieces into the hot oil and fry them for 2 to 3 minutes, or until they puff up beautifully and become golden brown.

6. Drain and season: Remove the crispy chicharrón from the oil using a slotted spoon and gently shake off excess grease. Transfer them to paper towels or a wire rack to cool slightly. Sprinkle with kosher salt while they’re still warm.

7. Serve and enjoy: Serve your scrumptious chicharrón with lime wedges, if desired, for a tangy twist. Enjoy them as a snack or as an accompaniment to your favorite dishes!

By following these simple steps, you can now make mouthwatering chicharrón at home that’s sure to impress your family and friends. With its crunchy texture and rich flavor, homemade chicharrón will undoubtedly become a crowd favorite!
