How to Make Bedspreads: 14 Steps

1. Choose the right fabric: Select a durable and easy-to-wash fabric that complements your existing bedroom decor. Cotton, linen, and polyester blends are popular choices.
2. Measure your bed: Determine the dimensions of your bed, including the height of your mattress and any additional length you want for the sides and bottom to drape over.
3. Calculate fabric yardage: Calculate the amount of fabric you’ll need based on the bedspread’s dimensions, keeping in mind that you’ll need extra for seams and hems.
4. Buy your materials: Purchase the required fabric yardage, as well as coordinating thread, pins, scissors, and a sewing machine or needle for hand-sewing.
5. Cut your fabric: Using sharp fabric scissors and a straight edge, cut your fabric into three large panels – one top panel and two side panels.
6. Hem side panels: First, fold under approximately half an inch on each of the raw edges of the side panels. Then fold under again to enclose the raw edge completely before sewing a straight line along each fold to create finished edges.
7. Align panels: With right sides facing each other, align the top panel with one of the side panels, with their respective long edges touching each other.
8. Pin side panel to top panel: Pin the length of the side panel to its top panel counterpart while making sure they are aligned correctly.
9. Sew side panel to top panel: Sew a straight stitch about ½ inch in from the aligned edges along their lengths to attach them together. Repeat this process for both side panels being attached to their respective sections on the top panel.
10. Trim corners if necessary: If your bedspread includes decorative corners or scalloped edges, trim these away with careful cuts using fabric scissors.
11. Sew bottom hem: Fold under approximately ¼ inch from the raw edge of the bottom of the bedspread and press it with an iron. Fold it under again, by about ¼ inch, and sew a straight stitch along the fold. This finishes the bottom hem.
12. Press seams: Use an iron to press all seams flat, which will allow for a neater appearance when the bedspread is completed.
13. Add final touches: If desired, you can add additional embellishments such as buttons, embroidery, or appliqué to personalize your bedspread.
14. Make your bed: Once your bedspread is complete, position it on top of your fitted sheet and any blankets you use. Arrange pillows and other decorative elements to achieve the desired look.
With these 14 steps, you’ll have a beautiful and custom-made bedspread to enhance your bedroom and provide extra comfort for a peaceful night’s sleep. Happy sewing!
