How to Dance Tahitian: 8 Steps

Step 1: Understand the basics of Tahitian dance

Tahitian dance, also known as Ori Tahiti, is a traditional Polynesian art form that tells stories through movements of the body. It primarily focuses on hip movements and graceful hand gestures. Before you start learning the steps, familiarize yourself with the style and the origins of Tahitian dance.

Step 2: Learn the different types of Tahitian dance

There are two primary styles of Tahitian dance: the slow and graceful ‘ote’a and the fast-paced aparima. Familiarize yourself with both styles by watching videos and performances from experienced dancers.

Step 3: Warm up and stretch

Before starting any dance session, it’s essential to warm up your muscles and stretch to avoid injuries. Perform a light cardio exercise like jogging or jumping jacks for five minutes, followed by stretching your legs, hips, arms, and back.

Step 4: Master the basic hip movements

The foundation of Tahitian dance lies in hip movements called ami and figure eight (fa’arapu). Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees slightly, and practice moving your hips left to right in a circular motion (ami) or in a figure-eight pattern (fa’arapu).

Step 5: Practice hand gestures

In addition to hip movements, Tahitian dance incorporates expressive hand gestures that correspond with the storyline being portrayed. Practice various hand motions such as waving, mimicking the motion of ocean waves, or creating a circular motion around your head.

Step 6: Incorporate footwork

As you become more comfortable with hip movements and hand gestures, begin to add footwork into your dancing. Basic steps include walking forwards or backwards while maintaining fluid hip movements, pa’oti (short shuffling steps), and hati (quick side-to-side steps).

Step 7: Put it all together

Combine your mastered hip movements, hand gestures, and footwork to create a sequence of steps that tell a story. Practice these sequences along with traditional Tahitian music, focusing on synchronizing your movements with the rhythm of the beat.

Step 8: Join a class or local group

To refine your technique and learn more advanced moves, consider joining a local Tahitian dance class or social group. Engaging with experienced dancers will provide valuable insights and motivation to improve your skills.

By following these eight steps, you’re well on your way to mastering the art of Tahitian dance. Remember to be patient with yourself, as learning any new skill takes time and practice. Most importantly, enjoy the process and embrace the vibrant culture behind this beautiful art form.
