How to Make a Smoke Grenade: 14 Steps

Smoke grenades can be useful for several purposes such as creating a smoke screen, signaling, or adding special effects to an event. Making your own smoke grenade is possible with some simple materials and steps. When attempting this project, always take necessary precautions and work in a safe environment.
1. Gather materials: You will need an empty cardboard tube, ping pong balls, aluminum foil, a marker pen, tape, scissors, and a lighter or matches.
2. Prepare the workspace: Choose an open, well-ventilated area away from flammable materials and objects.
3. Prepare the cardboard tube: Trim the tube to the desired length. Ensure that it is wide enough for a ping pong ball to fit inside comfortably.
4. Cut the aluminum foil: Measure and cut pieces of aluminum foil slightly larger than the circumference of the cardboard tube.
5. Wrap the tube’s exterior with aluminum foil: This step helps to insulate and protect the tube from heat generated during combustion.
6. Tape the edges of the foil: Securely tape down the edges of the aluminum foil along the length of the cardboard tube.
7. Drill or poke a small hole in the center of one end of the tube: This hole will serve as an ignition point for your smoke grenade.
8. Crush the ping pong balls: Use a hammer or similar blunt object to crush ping pong balls into small fragments.
9. Collect crushed ball fragments in a container: Place broken ping pong ball pieces in a bowl or another suitable container.
10. Fill cardboard tube with crushed material: Carefully funnel crushed material into one end of your wrapped cardboard tube until it is full.
11. Insert a piece of tape inside cardboard tube opening and seal it off firmly but leave a small portion sticking out from hole previously drilled/poked (This will act like fuse)
12. Close off open end: Fold the remaining foil over the open end of the tube and secure tightly in place with tape.
13. Test your grenade: In a safe and controlled environment, ignite the tape “fuse” and observe the smoke emitted from your homemade grenade.
14. Cleanup and disposal: Properly dispose of any remaining materials and extinguish any fires that may have resulted from your test.
Remember to exercise caution while working with combustible materials – adult supervision is advised if you are under 18 years old. Always make sure to use your smoke grenade in a responsible manner and adhere to local laws and regulations.
