Introduction

A T-shirt quilt is a fantastic way to preserve memories and give new life to your old T-shirts. Whether they are from sports teams, concerts, or events, T-shirt quilts are functional and personal keepsakes that can be cherished for years to come. In this article, we will walk you through the process of making a quilt from your beloved T-shirts.

Supplies Needed

1. T-shirts – You will need at least 12-16 T-shirts depending on the size of your desired quilt.

2. Rotary cutter and cutting mat

3. Quilt batting

4. Quilting ruler

5. Sewing machine

6. Coordinating thread

7. Iron and ironing board

8. Quilt backing fabric

9. Pins or fabric clips

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Quilt from T-Shirts

1. Prepare the T-shirts: Wash and dry all your T-shirts to ensure they are clean and pre-shrunk. Use an iron to smooth out any wrinkles.

2. Decide on your quilt size: Lay out the shirts on a flat surface in the arrangement you would like for your quilt. Measure the size of the largest design and add two inches to each side for seam allowance.

3. Cut your squares: Place a cutting mat under each shirt before using a rotary cutter and quilting ruler for precise cuts. Cut each shirt into squares according to the measurements you determined in step 2.

4. Trim and stabilize: Once all of your squares have been cut, trim any uneven edges and apply fusible interfacing to the backs of each square for stabilization.

5. Sew squares together: Arrange your squares in the desired pattern before sewing them together with a ½-inch seam allowance using a sewing machine.

6. Create rows: Once you’ve sewn all your squares together, join them together in rows. Sew a ½-inch seam allowance along each row to connect the squares.

7. Connect rows: With all rows assembled, connect them by sewing each row together using a ½-inch seam allowance.

8. Prepare quilt backing and batting: Cut your quilt backing fabric and quilt batting to the same size as your assembled T-shirt quilt top.

9. Assemble and baste the layers: Lay out the backing fabric on a large flat surface with the right side facing down. Place the batting on top of it followed by the T-shirt quilt top with the right side facing up. Secure these layers together with pins or fabric clips, making sure there are no wrinkles or folds in any layer.

10. Quilt it together: Use your sewing machine (with a quilting foot if available) to stitch through all three layers using a simple grid pattern or other desired quilting pattern.

11. Bind the edges: Finish your T-shirt quilt by binding the edges using your preferred method, such as creating a folded fabric binding strip or using pre-made bias tape.

And that’s it! With some patience and practice, you now have successfully created a one-of-a-kind T-shirt quilt to cherish for years to come. These quilts make great gifts and are an excellent way to showcase special memories in your life.
