Step 1: Research the flapper style

Before creating your flapper costume, research the fashion and characteristics of the flapper era. Look for images, illustrations, and written descriptions to get a solid understanding of the typical style elements of this 1920’s fashion movement.

Step 2: Choose your dress

Select a dress that will serve as the base of your flapper costume. Typical flapper dresses are loose-fitting, above-the-knee, and either sleeveless or with short sleeves. Look for something simple, as you’ll be adding more details later.

Step 3: Select your colors

Flapper costumes generally include bold colors or simple blacks and whites. Decide on a color palette that suits your personal style and preferences.

Step 4: Add fringe

Fringe is an iconic component of flapper dresses. Visit a fabric store to purchase fringe that matches your dress color. Sew or use fabric glue to attach the fringe along the hemline, and around the neckline if desired. The more fringe, the better!

Step 5: Embellish with beads or sequins

Adding beads or sequins can add some sparkle to your flapper costume. You can create intricate patterns or simply scatter them throughout the dress for added texture.

Step 6: Choose appropriate footwear

Low-heeled shoes or strappy sandals were typical for flappers. Look for vintage inspired shoes in either gold, silver or a color that matches your dress.

Step 7: Accessorize with jewelry

Layered strands of pearls, long necklaces, and bold bracelets are popular accessories in the flapper style. Choose pieces that enhance your outfit and complement your overall look.

Step 8: Wear a headpiece

Flappers often wore headbands adorned with feathers or jewels. You can make one yourself using elastic, embellishments, and hot glue, or purchase one from a costume shop.

Step 9: Style your hair

Bobbed or finger-wave hairstyles were common during the flapper era. If you don’t want to cut your hair, consider wearing a wig, tucking your hair under a hat, or pinning it up to create the illusion of a shorter hairstyle.

Step 10: Apply makeup

Apply makeup that’s characteristic of the 1920’s, such as dark lipstick, defined eyebrows, and smoky eyeshadow. Don’t be afraid to be bold with your makeup choices.

Step 11: Practice your dance moves

Flappers were known for their lively dancing at parties and speakeasies. Familiarize yourself with popular dances of the time, such as the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, to truly embrace the spirit of your flapper costume.

By following these 11 steps, you’ll have successfully created an authentic flapper costume that will transport you back to the roaring twenties! Enjoy the experience and have fun dancing the night away.
