How to Make a Bong: 12 Steps

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Collect everything you will need for the project. This includes a plastic bottle, a downstem or pen, a bowl or socket wrench head, a lighter, and some water.

Step 2: Choose the Bottle

Pick a plastic bottle that is an appropriate size for your bong. Avoid using bottles that are too thin or flimsy, as they may not withstand the pressure of the process.

Step 3: Cut the Downstem Hole

With the pen or downstem in hand, locate where you want the hole to be on your bottle. Keep in mind that this hole will house your downstem and must be angled slightly downward. Gently heat the area using a lighter and push through with the pen or downstem to create a snug fit.

Step 4: Insert the Downstem

Insert the narrow end of your pen or actual downstem into the hole you just created. Make sure it fits well and is fairly air-tight.

Step 5: Create Your Bowl

Using the socket wrench head as the bowl, wrap it with non-toxic tape to create an air-tight seal when placed on top of your downstem or pen. Alternatively, if using an actual bowl meant for cannabis smoking, simply attach it to your downstem.

Step 6: Attach Your Bowl to Downstem

Attach your makeshift socket bowl or actual bowl to the end of your pen/downstem. Make sure it’s securely attached and air-tight for proper functionality.

Step 7: Fill with Water

Fill your bong with water so that around half of your downstem is submerged. Remember that too much water can make it hard to draw air through and not enough water will prevent proper filtration.

Step 8: Pack Your Bowl

Grind up some cannabis and carefully pack it into your bowl. Don’t pack it too tightly or loosely to ensure a smooth inhale.

Step 9: Create a Carburetor

Optional – You can create a carburetor (carb) hole near the top of your bong to help clear the chamber of smoke. Use a similar hole-making process from Step 3 and make sure the hole is large enough for your finger to cover.

Step 10: Prepare to Inhale

Hold the bong with one hand and cover the carb hole (if you created one) with your thumb or a finger. Place your mouth over the opening at the top of the bong and form an air-tight seal.

Step 11: Light Your Bowl

With your other hand, light your cannabis while gently inhaling, drawing air and smoke into the chamber through the submerged downstem.

Step 12: Inhale and Enjoy!

Once you feel that there is enough smoke in the chamber, uncover the carb hole or remove your mouth from the top of the bong. Inhale deeply to pull smoke into your lungs. Exhale, and enjoy!

Remember that water filtration in homemade bongs may not be as effective as in professionally-made ones. Always use caution, know your limits, and never consume cannabis where it’s illegal. Consider using professional smoking apparatuses approved for cannabis consumption for a safer experience.
