If you’re planning to install an above-ground pool in your backyard, one of the essential preliminary tasks is to ensure that the ground is level. An unleveled pool not only poses safety risks but can also lead to damage and uneven water distribution. In this article, we will outline 15 steps to help you level your pool effectively.
1. Choose an area: Select a suitable location in your backyard that’s away from trees, slopes, and other obstructions.
2. Measure the pool area: Determine the dimensions of your pool and add at least 2 feet on each side for extra workspace.
3. Mark the area: Use wooden stakes, strings, or spray paint to mark out the perimeter of your pool.
4. Clear the area: Remove any grass, weeds, rocks, or other debris within the marked space.
5. Check existing level: Place a long spirit level or laser level across the cleared area to identify any high spots or low spots.
6. Determine highest point: Select the highest point in the pool area as a reference for leveling all other points.
7. Excavate high points: Remove soil from high points using a shovel or heavy equipment until they are level with your reference point.
8. Create a center stake: Hammer a stake into the ground at the exact center of your pool area; this will serve as a guide for leveling outward.
9. Attach string and tape measure: Connect strings from the center stake to all perimeter stakes while attaching a tape measure in order to maintain accuracy throughout the leveling process.
10. Dig trenches along perimeter: To create stable support around your pool, dig shallow trenches around 6-12 inches wide and 3-4 inches deep along the outer edges of your designated area.
11. Fill trenches with sand or crushed stone: Fill the trenches with either sand or crushed stone up to ground level, which will provide a firm, stable base for the pool.
12. Tamp down the base: Use a hand tamper or plate compactor to compact the filled trenches until they are firm and resist any further compression.
13. Recheck the level: Place the spirit level or laser level across various points within the pool area to confirm that everything is now entirely level.
14.Add a final layer of sand: Apply a 2-inch layer of sand over the entire leveled area, which will serve as additional cushioning for your pool’s liner.
15. Install your pool: With your now perfectly leveled ground, proceed with installing your above-ground pool according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
By following these 15 steps, you can quickly and efficiently level your above-ground pool, ensuring optimal performance and safety for years to come. Happy swimming!
