Google Sheets is a powerful tool that allows you to create and manage spreadsheets online. It is especially useful when you want to keep track of large amounts of data. Often, there are times when you need to highlight unique or distinct values in your spreadsheet. Highlighting distinct values can help you quickly identify specific values and make data analysis easier. Here we are going to walk you through the steps on how to highlight distinct values in Google Sheets.

Step 1: Open your Spreadsheet

To begin highlighting unique values in your Google Sheets spreadsheet, open the desired spreadsheet where you want to work.

Step 2: Select the Data Range

Next, select the range of data that you want to highlight unique values for. To do this, click on the first cell of your spreadsheet, hold down the mouse button and drag your mouse to select the entire range of data.

Step 3: Open the “Conditional Formatting” Option

Go to the top menu bar of your Google Sheets window and click on “Format”. From the drop-down menu that appears, click on “Conditional formatting”. A new window will open with several options.

Step 4: Add a New Formatting Rule

From the Conditional Formatting window, press the “+ Add another rule” button. This will allow you to add a new rule for highlighting distinct values.

Step 5: Choose the “Custom formula is” Option

In the “Format cells if” drop-down menu, select the “Custom formula is” option.

Step 6: Enter the Formula

Enter the following formula: =countif(A:A,A1)=1. In this formula, “A:A” refers to the range that we are counting, and “A1” refers to the first cell in the range. The formula counts how many times the first value appears within the range, then highlights it if it appears only once.

Step 7: Choose your Formatting Style

Once you’ve entered the correct formula, you need to choose how to format the cells that fit the condition. This can be done by clicking on the “Formatting style” drop-down menu. Select the formatting method that you want to use, such as changing the text color, background color, or font style.

Step 8: Apply the Formatting

After selecting your formatting style, click on the “Done” button. The unique values in the selected range will now be highlighted using the formatting style that you have chosen.

In conclusion, by following these simple steps, you can highlight unique or distinct values in your Google Sheets spreadsheet, making data analysis easier and more efficient. Identifying unique values in a spreadsheet can be useful for finding duplicates and spotting data that is not following a regular pattern. It also makes it easier to identify specific values for further analysis or data management.
