How to Grill Country Style Ribs
During the warm summer months, grilling season is in full swing. One of the most scrumptious and mouth-watering options for your barbecue menu is country-style ribs. These thick, flavorful cuts of pork are perfect for grilling and will have your family and friends begging for seconds. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step on how to grill country style ribs to perfection.
1. Prepare the Ribs:
First, you’ll need to select your country-style ribs at the grocery store or butcher shop. Make sure they have a nice pink color, marbled with fat throughout. This fat will make your ribs tender and savory once cooked. Once you’ve purchased your ribs, it’s time to prep them. Rinse them under cold water and pat dry with paper towels before seasoning.
2. Seasoning:
To give your ribs a burst of flavor, create a dry rub with your choice of spices and herbs. Some popular options include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper for a spicy kick. Combine these ingredients in a small bowl and rub this mixture generously over each rib. Wrap the seasoned ribs in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight or for at least an hour to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
3. Preheat Your Grill:
Prepare your grill for indirect heat grilling by setting up two zones: one side with high heat and the other side with medium-low or low heat. If using a gas grill, turn on one side of burners to medium-high while leaving the other side off. If using charcoal grills, spread hot coals on one side only after they are fully ashed over which will create hot and cool zones.
4. Begin Grilling:
Now that your grill is preheated and ready to go, it’s time to grill the ribs. Place your ribs on the hottest part of the grill and sear them for 3-4 minutes per side, until they have a nice charred appearance. Once seared, transfer the ribs to the cooler side of the grill to continue cooking through indirect heat.
5. Cook Low and Slow:
Country-style ribs require a longer cooking time due to their thickness. Check your meat every 20-30 minutes and be prepared for them to take up to 1.5 to 2 hours for proper tenderness and moisture retention. Keep your grill at a consistent temperature of around 250-300°F (121-149°C).
6. Baste With Sauce:
During the last 20-30 minutes of cooking, you can brush on your favorite barbecue sauce for added flavor and texture. Be sure not to baste too early as this can cause the sugars in the sauce to burn.
7. Check Ribs for Readiness:
The ribs will be ready once their internal temperature reaches around 190°F (88°C) using an instant-read thermometer. Another indicator is when a small fork or knife easily pierces the meat through with little resistance.
8. Let it Rest:
Before indulging in your delicious country-style ribs, allow them to rest for around 10 minutes after removing them from the grill. This will help retain their tenderness and juiciness.
9. Enjoy!
After allowing your juicy country-style ribs to rest, it’s finally time to dig in! Serve these succulent masterpieces alongside your favorite side dishes and enjoy a satisfying summertime meal with family and friends.
Happy grilling!
