Introduction:

Folding a paper box is an art that has been passed down through generations. Mastering this skill can lead you to create beautiful and practical origami boxes to store your small belongings. The process may seem daunting at first, but with the following 12 easy steps, you’ll be able to make your own paper box with ease.

Step 1: Choose your paper

Start by selecting a square piece of paper. The size of the paper will dictate the size of the finished box. A standard-sized origami sheet works well for beginners.

Step 2: Create crease lines

Fold the paper in half horizontally, then unfold. Repeat this step vertically to mark two perpendicular crease lines across the paper.

Step 3: Fold the corners

Fold all four corners of the paper towards the center crease intersection so that they meet at one point.

Step 4: Side folds

Unfold the two opposite corners along one side, leaving a triangular shape. Next, fold both exposed sides towards the center crease line.

Step 5: Unfold sides and corners

Now, unfold both folded sides and return all four corners to their original positions.

Step 6: Rotate and repeat

Rotate your paper by 180 degrees and repeat steps 4 and 5 for the remaining two sides.

Step 7: Forming the flaps

You should now have two opposing triangles connected by a middle rectangular section. Fold each triangle tip towards its respective center crease.

Step 8: Lift the side flaps

Gently lift both side flaps and fold them up along their original side creases, bringing each triangular corner upwards as well.

Step 9: Create the box’s walls

Taking the triangular corner flap from step 8, fold it over towards the inside of your box walls (the raised flaps). The triangular corners will automatically lock into place, securing the walls.

Step 10: Repeat steps 8 – 9

Rotate the paper by 180 degrees, and repeat steps 8 and 9 to form the other half of the box.

Step 11: Shape your box

Use your fingers to gently push the box’s corners out, forming a square shape. Make sure all the edges are neatly aligned.

Step 12: Adjust to your preference (Optional)

To create a smaller paper box, simply adjust the size of your fold or cut your paper to a smaller size before starting. You may also choose to fold back the remaining triangular corner flaps for a smoother interior finish.

Conclusion:

And there you have it – a beautiful, handmade paper box accomplished in just 12 simple steps. Practice this technique with different paper sizes or patterns to further enhance your origami skills and create boxes perfect for gifting or personal use.
