How to Give a Dog Benadryl: 9 Steps

Benadryl, also known as diphenhydramine, is an over-the-counter antihistamine that can help relieve your dog’s allergy symptoms. As a pet owner, it is crucial to know the proper steps to administer Benadryl safely and effectively. Follow these nine steps to ensure that your furry friend receives the appropriate dosage:

1. Consult your veterinarian: Before administering any medication, check with your vet to confirm that Benadryl is safe for your dog’s specific age, weight, and health condition.

2. Determine the proper dosage: Typically, veterinarians recommend a dosage of 1 mg per pound of body weight. To calculate this for your dog, divide their weight (in pounds) by their recommended dose (1 mg/lb). For example, a 25-pound dog would need 25 mg of Benadryl.

3. Check the medication concentration: Ensure that you are using a children’s or adult formula containing only diphenhydramine without any additional ingredients such as acetaminophen or pseudoephedrine, which can be toxic to dogs.

4. Prepare the medication: If using liquid Benadryl, measure out the correct dosage using a measuring spoon or syringe. If using tablets, crush the appropriate amount into a fine powder.

5. Create an incentive: To encourage your dog to take their medicine without fuss, mix it with something they love like wet food or peanut butter (only use peanut butter without xylitol). Place this mixture aside for now.

6. Gather supplies and choose a comfortable location: Ensure you have treats and positive reinforcement tools close by in a calm and familiar environment.

7. Position your dog comfortably: If possible, have someone assist you by gently holding your dog while you administer the medication.

8. Administer the medicine: Lift the upper lip of your dog to expose the gap between their teeth and gums. Using a spoon or syringe, gently deposit the Benadryl mixture into the pouch created by their cheek and gums.

9. Reward your dog: Provide plenty of praise and a treat following the administration to create a positive experience.

Remember that it may take up to an hour for your dog to experience relief from their allergy symptoms, so be patient. Always monitor your dog closely after giving them Benadryl and contact your veterinarian if you notice any adverse reactions or if their condition worsens.
