How to Format Windows
Formatting a Windows operating system is often a necessary process when your computer becomes unresponsive, infected with malware, or encounters persistent issues. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of formatting your Windows computer, ensuring a clean and fresh start.
Before proceeding, make sure to back up all crucial data, as formatting erases every file and folder on your computer.
1.Create a bootable media
To format Windows, you need a bootable media device like a USB flash drive or DVD containing the Windows installation files. You can create one using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool.
Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s official website and install it on your computer. Follow the prompts to create a bootable media by choosing the desired language, edition, and architecture.
2.Boot from the media
Insert the bootable media into your computer’s respective ports. Restart the PC and access the BIOS/UEFI setup menu by pressing the appropriate key (such as F2, F12, or DEL) during the startup process. Change the boot priority order so that the USB/DVD is at the top of the list. Save changes and exit.
3.Begin Windows installation
Your computer will restart again and load from your bootable media. Select your preferred language, time format, and keyboard input method on the first screen that appears. Press “Next” to proceed.
Click “Install now” after reaching the main Windows setup window. If prompted to enter a product key, you have two options: input it if you have one or click “I don’t have a product key” for now (you’ll be prompted for it later). Choose your desired version of Windows and accept the license terms.
4.Select custom installation
On this screen, click on “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).” You will see a list of available drives/partitions. Look for the primary drive (usually labeled “Drive 0”) on which your current OS is installed.
5.Format the drive
Select the desired partition, usually the primary one, and click on “Format.” A warning message will appear, reminding you that this action will erase all data on the partition. After double-checking that you’ve backed up relevant data, click “OK” and wait for the formatting process to complete.
6.Install Windows
With formatting finished, you can now proceed with installing Windows on the freshly formatted partition. Select it, click “Next,” and follow the prompts.
7.Complete post-installation tasks
After Windows finishes installing, proceed through post-installation configurations like region selection, connecting to Wi-Fi, setting up a new user account, and customizing privacy settings.
With your Windows computer freshly formatted and reinstalled, it’s ready for you to restore your files from a backup or start anew with a clean system. Just remember to keep your PC protected with up-to-date security software and be diligent about backing up your files in the future.
