How to Fix Windows Update When It’s Stuck in Windows 10
If you’re a Windows 10 user, you may have encountered a situation where your Windows update is stuck. This can be a frustrating experience, as it can prevent you from getting important security updates and new features.
However, there are a few steps you can take to fix the issue and get your Windows update back on track. Here’s how.
- Restart Your Computer
The first step in fixing a stuck Windows update is to restart your computer. This can help to clear any temporary files and processes that may be causing the issue.
To restart your computer, click on the Windows Start menu and select “Power”. Then, choose “Restart”. Wait for your computer to restart and see if the Windows update is still stuck.
- Check Your Internet Connection
If your internet connection is slow or dropping out, your Windows update may become stuck. To check your internet connection, try opening a web browser and visiting a few different websites.
If your internet connection is consistent, move on to the next step.
- Run Windows Troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can help fix issues with Windows updates. To access this tool, go to “Settings” and select “Update & Security”. Then, click on “Troubleshoot” and select “Windows Update”.
The troubleshooter will scan your system for any issues and try to fix them. Once it’s finished, try running the Windows update again.
- Clear the Windows Update Cache

net start msiserver
Once the commands have finished running, try running the Windows update again.
- Perform a System Restore
If none of the above steps have worked, you may need to perform a system restore. This will revert your computer back to a previous state before the update became stuck.
To perform a system restore, go to “Settings” and select “Update & Security”. Then, click on “Recovery” and select “Reset this PC”. Choose the “Keep my files” option and follow the prompts to complete the system restore.
