Error Code 0x80070422 is an issue that Windows 10 users may encounter while attempting to perform a Windows update or while using certain features of the operating system such as the Windows Firewall or the Windows Defender antivirus. This error occurs when the Windows Update Service or the associated Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not running due to various reasons.

Here are some steps you can follow to fix Error Code 0x80070422 in Windows 10:

1. Check if the Windows Update Service is running

It is essential to have the Windows Update Service running to perform Windows updates and prevent Error Code 0x80070422. To check if the service is running, press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue box, type “services.msc” and press Enter. The Services window will open, and you can search for the “Windows Update” service. Right-click on it and select “Properties.” Check if the “Startup Type” is set to “Automatic.” If it is not, set it to “Automatic” and click on “Apply” and “OK,” then start the service by clicking on “Start” on the same screen.

2. Check if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running

The BITS service is necessary for Windows updates, and it should also be running. To check this, follow the same steps as with the Windows Update Service and locate the BITS service. Verify that the “Startup Type” is set to “Manual” and click on “Apply” and “OK.” Then, start the service by clicking on “Start.”

3. Enable Windows Firewall

Error Code 0x80070422 can also be caused by the Windows Firewall being disabled. To ensure that the Firewall is enabled, open the Control Panel, click on “System and Security,” then “Windows Defender Firewall.” Click on “Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.” Choose the “Turn on Windows Defender Firewall” option and click on “OK.”

4. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

The Windows Update Troubleshooter is a built-in tool that helps to identify and fix issues related to Windows updates. To run it, open the Control Panel, click on “Troubleshooting,” then “System and Security,” and select “Fix problems with Windows Update” under the “Windows” section. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

5. Disable antivirus temporarily

Sometimes, Error Code 0x80070422 can also be caused by antivirus software blocking the Windows Update Service. To rule out this possibility, temporarily disable your antivirus software and try updating your system again. If the error disappears, add an exception in your antivirus to allow the Windows Update Service to run.

In conclusion, Error Code 0x80070422 in Windows 10 can be fixed by following the above steps. Ensure that the Windows Update Service and the BITS service are running, enable Windows Firewall, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and temporarily disable antivirus software. By doing so, you can get past the obstacle and proceed with updating your Windows 10 operating system without encountering any errors.
