An upset stomach can be uncomfortable, painful, and downright inconvenient. Here are seven steps to help alleviate your symptoms and get you on the road to recovery.

1. Identify the cause: Start by determining if there is a particular trigger for your upset stomach. Common causes include overeating, eating too quickly, consuming excessively spicy or fatty foods, or experiencing stress or anxiety. Pinpointing the cause can help you prevent similar issues in the future.

2. Keep yourself hydrated: Drinking water is essential for proper digestion and overall health. When you have an upset stomach, sip on water throughout the day to ease discomfort and maintain hydration.

3. Avoid exacerbating foods and beverages: Certain foods and drinks can worsen an upset stomach. Steer clear of caffeine, alcohol, fatty and spicy foods, as well as acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.

4. Opt for bland foods: Bland foods are easier on your digestive system and can help soothe your stomach. Opt for simple, easily digestible options such as bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (commonly called the BRAT diet), crackers, or plain yogurt.

5. Rest up: Giving your body time to rest is important when nursing an upset stomach. Relax and avoid any strenuous activity until you’re feeling better.

6. Use over-the-counter remedies: If you’re experiencing persistent discomfort, consider using over-the-counter medicines like antacids, bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), or digestive enzymes to help ease your symptoms.

7. Consult a medical professional: If your upset stomach persists for several days or is accompanied by severe pain, fever, vomiting, or bloody stools, consult a healthcare professional immediately.

In most cases, an upset stomach will improve on its own with time and simple home remedies. By following these steps, you can help alleviate your discomfort and get back to feeling your best.
