Coving is a decorative feature that can add elegance and character to any room. It is commonly used to conceal the join between walls and ceilings, creating a smooth and professional finish. Installing coving may seem challenging, but with the right tools, materials, and a little patience, it can be done in 14 steps.

.Choose the coving: Begin by selecting the coving material and design that suits your taste and room style. Common materials include plaster, lightweight polystyrene, or polyurethane.

.Measure the room: Measure the perimeter of the room to determine how much coving you will need. Purchase extra coving to account for any mistakes or damage.

.Gather tools and materials: You will need a miter box, fine-toothed saw, measuring tape, pencil, spirit level, adhesive (suitable for your chosen coving), sandpaper, filler, a cloth or sponge, and a step ladder.

.Practice cutting: Coving is typically cut at 45-degree angles for corner joints. Use scrap coving or offcuts to practice cutting clean, accurate angles before attempting on your purchased pieces.

.Mark cutting points on the coving: Measure each length of wall where you will install the coving and mark cutting points accordingly on your lengths of coving material. Always start with the longest pieces.

.Cut the coving: Secure the coving in a miter box and use a fine-toothed saw to cut it at the marked points using a steady sawing motion.

.Dry fit the coving: Before applying adhesive, position each piece of cut coving along its designated wall segment to check for fit and alignment with adjacent pieces.

.Sand and fill as needed: If necessary, smooth uneven edges by lightly sanding them down. Fill small gaps with filler and allow it to dry before installing.

.Apply adhesive: Apply a generous layer of adhesive to the back of each piece of coving, focusing on the top and bottom edges that will contact the wall and ceiling.

.Install the coving: Starting from one corner of the room, press the coving firmly against the wall and ceiling, ensuring that it aligns with previously drawn reference lines.

.Check for alignment: Use a spirit level to ensure that each piece is positioned correctly before moving on to the next. Adjust as needed by applying additional adhesive or filler where required.

.Clean up excess adhesive: Wipe away any excess adhesive that has seeped out using a damp cloth or sponge before it sets.

.Allow adhesive to set: Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your chosen adhesive’s recommended drying time and allow it to set fully.

.Apply finishing touches: Once the coving is securely fixed in place, you can apply a paint finish or additional decorative features like molding or cornices to complete the look.

And there you have it! By following these 14 steps, you can successfully install coving and add an elegant touch to any room in your home.
