File History is a built-in backup feature in Windows 10 that automatically backs up your files to an external drive or network location. It’s a great tool for anyone who wants to protect their data from accidental deletion, data loss due to hardware failure, or malware attacks. In this article, we’ll show you how to enable or disable File History in Windows 10.

Enabling File History in Windows 10

Step 1: Connect an External Drive or Select a Network Location

The first step for enabling File History is to connect an external drive to your computer or select a network location. File History requires an external hard drive or network location to store your backup files.

Step 2: Turn On File History

1. Click the Start button and select Settings.

2. Click on Update & Security.

3. Click on Backup from the left pane.

4. Click on the Add a drive button.

5. Select the drive or network location where you want to save your files, and click OK.

6. Turn on the switch for File History.

7. Click on More options to configure additional settings, such as how frequently you want File History to create backups or how long it should keep your backups.

Disabling File History in Windows 10

If you no longer need File History or want to stop using it for any reason, you can easily disable it on your Windows 10 computer.

Step 1: Turn off File History

1. Click the Start button and select Settings.

2. Click on Update & Security.

3. Click on Backup from the left pane.

4. Turn off the switch for File History.

Step 2:

If you want to remove all of the backed-up data, click on More options.

5. Click on the “Backup options” link.

6. Under “Back up my files”, click the “Clean up versions” link.

7. Select either “Keep my backups” or “Delete older versions”.

8. Click the “Clean up” button.

Conclusion

File History is a useful feature for backing up your data and protecting it from accidental loss or damage. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily enable or disable File History as needed. Remember always to keep your important data backed up in case of any emergency.
