One of the most important aspects of writing is being able to keep track of your word count. A word count helps you determine the length of your document, figure out how much time it will take to read or deliver a presentation, and meet word count requirements for assignments. Microsoft Word offers several quick and easy methods for you to access your word count.

Method 1: Check the status bar

The status bar in Microsoft Word displays your word count in real-time, along with other important information about your document. If your status bar is not visible, click View and check the box for Status Bar to display it. The word count is displayed in the bottom left corner of the status bar. To get an accurate word count, select the text you want to count before looking at the status bar.

Method 2: Use the Word Count feature

Microsoft Word offers a built-in Word Count feature that provides more detailed information about your document’s word count. To access this feature, click on the Review tab on the ribbon. On the left-hand side, click the Word Count button. A dialog box will appear with information about your document’s word count, including the number of pages, words, characters (with and without spaces), paragraphs, and lines. The word count updates automatically as you edit your document.

Method 3: Check the Properties

Another way to see the word count in Microsoft Word is by checking the Properties of the document. To access properties, go to the File tab on the ribbon, click on Info, and then click on the Properties button. Next, select Advanced Properties. In the dialog box that appears, you will see the word count under the Statistics tab.

Method 4: Use a Keyboard Shortcut

For those who prefer to use shortcuts, there is a quick keyboard shortcut to access the Word Count feature. With your document open, press CTRL + SHIFT + G on your keyboard, and the Word Count feature will appear.
